Shaping Sustainable Futures: A Glimpse into Malaysia’s Urban Transformation

URBANICE MALAYSIA is at the forefront of Malaysia’s journey towards sustainable urbanization, championing the SDGs and fostering transformative policies. My visit underscored the agency’s role in steering the nation towards a data-driven, collaborative future. With new legislation on the horizon, the promise of enhanced city empowerment and international partnerships looms, heralding a new era of global sustainability.

Yesterday, I visited URBANICE MALAYSIA, a federal agency under the Ministry of local government development, which nationally advocates for sustainable urban development (#SUD) and directly advises cities on #SDGs localization. Their #COO, Dr Mohd Rizal Osman, invited me to meet Aliaa Mohd Nor, knowledge platform and advocacy lead, and Johan Sammy, partnership development & funding specialist. The #CEO, Norliza Hashim, is a #townplanner and a very influential person in Malaysian politics …

To my mind, #SDGs based transformation clearly needs a new organizational approach. In #Malaysia, the institutional move is quite impressive. A political framework is in place under the Prime minister’s department and policies/budget are monitored by the Ministry of Economy, which has the leading role among ministries. However, it is still a challenge to review and meet the goals towards a true impactful transformation. Likewise everywhere in the world, #capacity building is THE key for a great change …

A rich discussion and nice insights on #governance, cities #empowerment, integrated public #policies and the role of #data driven solutions and open-source urban platforms. A new “data sharing” law is coming soon …
We decided to keep the conversation going so as to identify potential collaboration. And why not between #Europe 🇪🇺 and #Malaysia 🇲🇾 ! 🤗
