Honored to Speak at ERIA: Shaping the Future of Digital Twins & Urban Sustainability in ASEAN

Honored to be invited to ERIA’s inception meeting in Jakarta 🇮🇩 (Jan 16, 2025) to discuss digital twins for urban sustainability in ASEAN. Alongside global experts, I contributed to the “Data Governance & Public Policy” session, sharing insights on agile governance, interoperability, and data strategies for smart cities. Excited to continue shaping this study, culminating in a final book with key policy recommendations.

Thrilled to share my participation at ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia‘s inception meeting for the “Digital Twins for Deep Sustainability” study in #Jakarta 🇮🇩 (16th January, 2025), where around 20 global and regional experts convened to chart pathways for leveraging digital twins to advance urban #sustainability across Southeast and East Asia. This milestone marks the culmination of a year-long effort to co-design the study’s framework (1), fostering cross-border knowledge exchange and actionable policy solutions aligned with global best practices in hashtag#datagovernance and smart and sustainable city innovation.

A highlight was contributing to the “Data Governance & Public Policy” session alongside two esteemed collaborators (2): Jose Palma Andres 🇵🇹🇧🇪 (ex-EU officer) and Lanfranco Marasso, Ph.D. 🇮🇹 (newly AlmavivA S.p.A.). We shared insights from our previous European collaborations, respectively on an EU-funded initiative exploring sustainable urban development (3) and a pioneering open digital urban platform demonstrator at EU scale (4).

Our discussions focused on balancing urban innovation with agile #governance and minimum #interoperability, acknowledging the unique challenges of deploying urban digital twins in #ASEAN‘s diverse regulatory and development landscapes. Our dialogue explored how different regional approaches, particularly around #datagovernance, could inform potential strategies for hashtag#ASEAN. We examined ways to leverage relevant lessons from various global experiences, including European initiatives.

Importantly, we recognised that even in #Europe 🇪🇺, there’s an ongoing struggle to create new innovative frameworks and methodologies to lead new types of policies aimed at reaching global goals and expected impact, within institutional diversity (#subsidiarity). This universal challenge underscores the importance of collaborative learning and adaptation across regions.

As #ASEAN cities embrace digital twins to reimagine sustainable futures, these collaborative exchanges demonstrate how shared knowledge can bridge regional priorities with global #innovation, fostering regional integration. Over the coming year, we will be contributing to the preparation of a final #book, synthesising our findings and recommendations, and particularly showcasing how a robust #datagovernance can attract investment to the region.

Grateful to #ERIA and all partners for fostering this collaborative spirit. Such partnerships underscore how collective expertise can help shape innovative regional approaches to urban challenges, turning bold ideas into actionable blueprints.

Let’s #work together ! 🌏
頑張りましょう ! 🇯🇵
