Shaping ASEAN’s Urban Future: Resilience, Inclusivity, and Data Governance

This week in Kuala Lumpur, a high-level ASEAN workshop led by ERIA, in collaboration with CITYNET AP and the ASEAN Secretariat, explored sustainable urban development — highlighting how digital tools, resilience, inclusivity, and responsible data governance can shape future-ready cities.

This week in #KualaLumpur 🇲🇾, led by ERIA: Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, in collaboration with CITYNET AP and under the auspices of The ASEAN Secretariat, I had the privilege to contribute to a high-level, internationally-oriented #workshop on the sidelines of the #ASEAN Mayors’ gathering, currently chaired by #Malaysia.

Alongside my European colleagues 🇪🇺, we presented an #integrated vision for sustainable urban development, showcasing how digital tools can accelerate #resilience and #inclusivity in rapidly evolving urban ecosystems. Beyond #technology, our focus addressed the critical issue of data #governance — a dimension increasingly sensitive in the era of #AI and shifting #global influence.

The #workshop provided a unique platform for exchanging global #expertise, reinforcing that urban sustainability relies not only on #innovation, but also on collective #leadership, strategic #foresight, and #governance capable of responding to both local and planetary challenges.

We are now turning these insights into concrete #policy recommendations and a forward-looking #publication by year-end, deliberately moving beyond conventional frameworks to bring fresh #perspectives and innovative solutions for urban #governance.
