In Bandung: Remembering the Spirit of Global Solidarity

While visiting Bandung for a colleague’s wedding, I reflected on the 70th anniversary of the 1955 Asian-African Conference—the moment when newly independent nations chose solidarity and moral leadership over division. Seventy years later, Bandung still challenges us to revive that humanist spirit in an era of fractured geopolitics.

Visited #Bandung 🇮🇩 yesterday to attend the wedding of an hashtag#ERIA colleague. The city holds a profound legacy: in 1955, #Bandung became the stage for the Asian-African Conference 🌍🌏, the first international #multiracial meeting bringing together leaders representing more than half of the world’s population.

This historic gathering, held in the shadow of #colonialism, #apartheid, and #ColdWar tensions, marked a turning point where nations chose #solidarity, #moral force, and the pursuit of #peace over division. #Indonesia 🇮🇩, still in its first decade of #independence, stood at the center of this new chapter in global history.

#Bandung is more than a city. It is a reminder that international #cooperation and shared #humanity can shape the course of world affairs.

In today’s new geopolitical order—marked by fractured #multilateralism, #transactional politics, and shifting #power balances—does the #humanist spirit of #Bandung still matter?
