Visiting Expo 2025 Osaka revealed a striking mix of ambition and uncertainty. Beneath the architectural brilliance and corporate optimism, the event reflected Japan\u2019s search for identity between technology and society, and the Global South\u2019s struggle for modern narratives. The Expo stands as a mirror of our times\u2014where spectacle often outshines substance.

Visiting the #Osaka<\/a> Expo in its final weeks felt like stepping into a global showcase of #ambition<\/a> and #uncertainty<\/a>. The site was packed \u2014 with hours-long lines \u2014 yet the urban design around the monumental wooden #RingOfHarmony<\/a> was impressive. Each national pavilion stood as a distinct architectural statement, reflecting #identities<\/a> more than ideas.

Beyond the grand #design<\/a>, the themes often felt hollow or overly generic. Japan\u2019s focus on the \u201c#FutureCity<\/a>\u201d \u2014 driven largely by corporations \u2014 presented #technology<\/a> as the path to #happiness<\/a>, more spectacular than credible. The once-distinctive Japanese approach to new #socialsystems<\/a> \u2014 so present twenty years earlier at Aichi#Expo2005<\/a>, where ecology, mobility, and community life were interwoven (e.g. #Toyota<\/a>) \u2014 seems to have faded from the narrative.

The #GlobalSouth<\/a> held a visible and assertive presence. Some of the strongest narratives came from Italy \ud83c\uddee\ud83c\uddf9 \u2014 where I had the privilege to speak \ud83d\udde3\ufe0f \u2014 merging artistic #heritage<\/a> with technological #innovation<\/a> while celebrating regional #diversity<\/a>. France \ud83c\uddeb\ud83c\uddf7, by contrast, offered a conservative vision, echoing what Japan aspired to in the 1980s: elegant but nostalgic, disconnected from people and places, aside from the inevitable Mont-Saint-Michel.

In the end, the Expo mirrors Japan \ud83c\uddef\ud83c\uddf5\u2019s ongoing quest for a coherent #identity<\/a> in globalization \u2014 balancing cultural #softpower<\/a> with its role as a #technology<\/a> supplier, yet still struggling to project dynamic innovation #ecosystems<\/a>. Meanwhile, the #GlobalSouth<\/a>, with a few spectacular exceptions, remains caught between cultural #nostalgia<\/a> and tourist-driven imagery rather than forward-looking #modernity<\/a>.

Japan\u2019s strategic focus on \u201c#happiness<\/a>\u201d is double-edged. While it projects #optimism<\/a> and harmony through technological progress, it risks ignoring the #social<\/a> realities shaping today\u2019s Japan \u2014 economic anxiety, demographic decline, and the quiet rise of #nationalist<\/a> sentiment. Only 57% of Japanese citizens report feeling happy, one of the lowest rates among developed nations (Mainichi \ud83d\uddde\ufe0f, 2024). The pursuit of #happiness<\/a> becomes less a shared social project than a fragile counter-narrative against deep social undercurrents.

Contrary to #Dubai<\/a> #Expo2020<\/a> \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddea\u2019s strategy toward urban #sustainability<\/a>, the #Expo2025<\/a>\u2019s afterlife may take shape as a Las Vegas-style resort, led by U.S. investment on the same island. From #sustainability<\/a> to slot machines \ud83c\udfb0 \u2014 a smooth transition from Future City to Future Business.
